When will construction begin and finish?

• A groundbreaking ceremony to commemorate the current Rec and celebrate the project is scheduled May 6 @ 4PM on the Rec patio

• Construction is scheduled to begin mid-May

• The Rec will remain open throughout the construction project

• Phase I of the project is tentatively scheduled to be completed in January 2010

• Phase II of the project is tentatively scheduled to be completed in August 2010

What will the new Rec look like?

How is the Rec addition/renovation impacting student fees?

Students taking 6 or more credits will see a fee increase of $35 per semester beginning Fall 2010.

What areas can I continue to use during renovations?

The Rec will remain open throughout renovations; however, portions of the building will be closed periodically for demolition/construction.

Fitness Areas. Both cardio and weight equipment will be available to participants. Plan your workout accordingly – our peak times are 2 p.m. – 8 p.m. You’ll be more likely to achieve your fitness goals during off peak hours.

Sport Clubs/Intramurals: Sport clubs & intramurals will continue to hold practices and games. Check our website as new schedules become available.

Group Fitness: Group fitness classes will still be held, though times/location may be modified. Visit our website for an updated schedule of group fitness classes as they become available.

Pool: The Rec pool will CLOSE on Monday, May 18. Rec Center members will have use of Moby and South College pools throughout the summer. Day use lockers will be available. More information about construction in this area will become available as the timeline is finalized.

Locker Rooms: Though Men's and Women's locker rooms at the will be closed this summer for renovation, the use of day lockers will be available during construction. Locker rooms at Moby will also be available. Please check the aquatics website for usage dates and hours.

Why is the Rec addition/renovation project being completed in this economic climate?

The new Rec project is financed with bonds legally obligating CSU to use the bond funds for the construction project as identified to the bond investors at the time of sale in June 2008. State funds will not be used for this construction project.

What will the new Rec feature?

The new Rec will add 60,000 sq ft bringing the total facility to 165,000 sq ft that contributes to the student experience by providing:

24,000 sq ft of cardio-weight fitness areas on two levels- equivalent to doubling the existing area

Multi-Activity Gym with curved walls to accommodate indoor soccer and other sports, 1 basketball court and 2 volleyball courts

Climbing tower, bouldering wall & bouldering cave

Outdoor bouldering rock

Outdoor Adventure resource room with maps, books, and rental equipment

2 state of the art massage rooms

Increase from 2 to 4 fitness studios

Spa size increased from 12 to 25 persons

New dry sauna and steam room accessible from the pool deck

Complete renovation of men’s and women’s locker rooms

Addition of 2 private changing rooms

6 non-gender specific restrooms

Refurbished indoor track

New entrance / lobby with lounge area

Multiple meeting spaces

Upgrades to mechanical, electrical and plumbing infrastructure to accommodate increased facility size contributing to energy efficiencies

Green features including a projected LEED Gold level certification

Where can I get information about new hours for the Rec during renovations?

Information regarding Rec hours, renovation progress and modified schedules and locations of activities and classes, as well as intramural and sport club activities can be accessed on the rec home page. You can also sign up to receive info about construction updates in the "Get the Word" box at the top of this page.

ATTENTION: When we re-open on Sunday, January 17th at noon, the new main entrance will be through the west pool door on the south side of the Rec Center.

Locker Rooms will be open TUESDAY, JANUARY 19. Lockers will be available to rent on Tuesday, January 19 at 6AM. For Spring/Summer 2010, full lockers (6 ft) are $50 and the half lockers (3 ft) are $30. Full lockers for the extended rental (Spring 2010+Summer 2010) are $85, extended half lockers are $51. Size F and C lockers will not be available until March. Towel Service will not be available this semester, but will be available during subsequent semesters once the facility is completed. Lockers are sold on a first come, first serve basis. Visit the Service Center to rent lockers and for more information.

This website will continually be updated with changes in building hours, schedules and relocation of activities including intramural sports, sport clubs  or fitness classes. Emails will be sent periodically to the University Community containing construction updates and information. You may also sign up to receive general construction emails in the box on the right. The first phase of construction is scheduled to be completed January 2010 with the new entrance, lobby, climbing wall, offices, meeting rooms, massage rooms and court space available for use by Rec members.  

 

The Rec addition/renovation was approved by the Student Fee Review Board in February 2008, Associated Students of Colorado State University in April 2008 and the CSU Board of Governors in May 2008.  Funding for the new Rec project is part of a CSU – Fort Collins campus bond that was secured in June 2008. Read an excerpt of Tony Frank's letter here or you can read the entire letter here.
